We had a meal there last month. The food was excellent and the pub is absolutely charming. It really does seem like you’re in the country when it is in London.
There are plenty of quiet corners to sit and talk upstairs too if that’s what you need.
There’s plenty to choose from on the wine and beer lists.
We’ll be back!
Great Party Venue
I had my birthday dinner in the private room upstairs. It’s a good size, has its own bar and toilets.
The wonderful Justine helped organise the event. I had 27 guests and we pre-ordered from a set menu that you can you find on the website. The pub was flexible and allowed me to have a steak option for a supplement.
The food was delicious! Starters included salmon and goats cheese tian. Mains included sirloin, fillet mignon and mushroom stroganoff.
The venue is wonderful, really homely and all the staff are fantastic!
Beer and a snack
We popped in on a very busy sunny and warm Sunday afternoon.Ir was busy but the staff were still polite and calm and we got served drinks and our snack without any delay. Its such a nice place for a wind down. The roasts looked great.
Great place for family party.
Lovely location- with great outdoor garden.
We were in a side room to ourselves for a family party but good view of other areas.
The food was good pub style food. The tomato soup was delicious. No problem with bringing own cake.
Staff were efficient and friendly. We were not rushed. There was a wedding party in another part of the pub-but it is large enough that it didn’t intrude on our enjoyment.
A lovely hidden pub with great food and excellent service!
My partner and I came across this pub completely by accident when the Ride London race was on, roads were closed and we were trying to get home after a weekend away. It looked beautiful and inviting from the outside, so we went in. We were feeling quite hungry so went through to the restaurant. We were there right at the end of lunch service but there was quite a large private party upstairs that we could hear. We ordered our food and were told that we’d need to wait about 30-40 minutes due the party upstairs having just ordered. We appreciated being told this because I would hate to have sat there waiting so long.
As it turned out we didn’t need to wait so long for our food. We ate the baked camembert and asparagus to start (both delicious) followed by roast beef. The food was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced. A lot of the Youngs pubs (Geronimo) charge £20 for the roast and it’s a lot cheaper here at £13.
The thing that struck us was the buzzing atmosphere at the pub. It was quite a sunny day and lot of people were sitting chatting outside. The staff are wonderful too; very attentive without being in your face.
Thinking of organising my birthday dinner there it was so good!
Great hidden pub
This is a lovely hidden pub in Putney Heath. There is a large outside area with lots of picnic tables and deck chairs. There is also a BBQ shack outside. The pub is large inside with a restaurant area to one side. Reasonable pricing on the menu and no fault in the food at all! Try the chorizo nibbles in honey – AMAZING! All the staff were extremely friendly and they keep all their lager glasses in the fridge which is a nice little touch in the summer! Would definitely recommend this pub for family friends or family lunches.
Brilliant Pub with excellent service and delicious food!
Great spot with a number of different drinks and a great friendly atmosphere! Food menu is excellent and something on there for everyone. Daily Specials board also available which looked delicious. I will definitely be back.
This was a friendly pub with a nice atmosphere, good food, pleasant staff and a nice selection of beers and wines, coupled with the nice almost country like location it is a nice place to spend a few relaxing hours
I frequent quite a few pubs in my spare time around the Putney area but I’ve never received service more exceptional than at the telegraph. The staff were all delightful and incredibly outgoing, it really made my friends and I feel welcome. The pub itself was gorgeous and the food was delicious, I would highly recommended their signature burger to any burger lovers! I will definitely be returning there and would strongly recommended going!
A fantastic meal for myself, my wife, son and mother in law. The roast dinners were so well cooked and really good portions. Excellent customer service too. A great afternoon!
Awesome atmosphere of a village like feeling. Great spot to grab a drink with a friend. Highly recommended 🙂
Why can’t all pubs be like this?
I was taken to a wine night on Thursday 11th May at this amazing place and was very impressed by the way the pub puts on it’s events. Such a lovely and friendly place with delicious food. The wine event, which includes some small plates, is an absolute steal (£20?) The wine talk was interesting and by the end of the evening all the tasters were talking and comparing notes. They must have the best pub garden in London as they face out on to Putney Heath. Excellent!
Great pub on the edge of Wimbledom / Putney. Great range of beers and spiirits and a comprehensive food menu too. Comfortable sofas inside and plenty of outside seating & shading. Plenty of parking a welcome bonus.
Very good country pub in London
I went in this pub because is close to my house but I’ve found out a really happy atmosphere in there, Andrea looked after me in a very nice and professional way, he makes me drink a couple of very tasty gin tonic that make this experience much better! I’ll be back very soon !!!
Bangers and Mash
Thank you for a lovely dinner. We enjoyed the food tonight, soup of the day and Bangers and Mash. UK at its best.
Thank you so much for all the arrangements for after the funeral. I thought it was all lovely and lots of the guests commented on the lovely venue and food.
We were looked after very well and I would certainly recommend it to others.
Just to say a huge Thank You for everything yesterday – Our big family Birthday Lunch was just perfect in every way!
The service, venue, food & even the sunny weather couldn’t have been better – Everybody had a wonderful afternoon! Thank You for arranging it all for Us & We will be back for sure!! A huge Thank You to Our wonderful waiter & waitress who couldn’t do enough fo Us all afternoon! No wonder Your pub is packed full all the time as You really are children and dig friendly – highly recommend!
The Buckingham Palace of Pubs!
I am in complete awe over this pub. From the view of the scenery that surrounds the pub, the wonderful greeting you get from the staff as soon as you enter this amazing building.
The knowledge the staff have when it comes to the wine and the absolute perfect meal they recommended to go with it. I could go on and on. But to be honest the best thing of all is that this is a very dog friendly pub. So the whole family enjoyed it. If you are in the mood to feel like you are way out in the country but still so very close to home then this is the pub for you. Even the Manager came over to see how everything was and said goodbye and thank you when we left. The only negative is that we didn’t find this pub sooner. Claude and the Telegraph team thank you. Your new regulars.
Spent a lovely two days at the Telegraph this bank holiday weekend. We only planned on visiting for a quick few drinks on Friday but after enjoying the vibe and seeing the great food coming out of the kitchen we decided to come back for Sunday lunch.
Despite being busy – we were not disappointed with the food! Great service too!! Will be visiting again asap
A hearty lunch
Visiting Putney for lunch with a friend, seemed like a decent place to relax. Wide space outside, plenty of benches and tables to sit on and space for children to run around and play games.
Had a very filling lentil and bean stew with toasted sourdough. It was very warming (much needed given the cold weather) and made for very good value. Didn’t drink, so can’t comment on the variety of wines or beers, but it seems like it’d be a great place to come in on a warm summer day.
Lovely space and amazing food
Had a meal with all my family, it was busy but all our food arrived so quickly and it was amazing , so tasty, was so full the whole day !
Lovely staff and the pub it’s so comfortable, felt like home.. definitely will come back !! The manager lady she was lovely with us, she gives so much attention in all customers. If i ever have a pub want to have this kind of service and people working with me!! 🙂
Very nice location and good food
Sorry, I was unable to take any pictures. We were too hungry and the food was too good!
This pub offers a nice beer garden and has a very cosi atmosphere inside. The staff is very friendly! The kids menu are great value and very delicious.
Visited April 2017
We stayed the weekend with friends who live in the area and went all three days.
Fantastic music, atmosphere, food, drinks, and staff. We will be back!

A long history
This was the first pub I worked in as a barmaid, back when the world was in black and white. I had my wedding reception here and later my husband’s wake
I’ve seen management come and go, some good, some bad, some indifferent. I had lunch here a few months ago with a very good friend, the staff were polte and friendly and the food was wonderful and real linen is always a treat. Highly recommend!
Fantastic Sunday lunch
My husband and I stopped at this lovely pub on Putney Heath on Saturday after walking out dog locally.
It was a fabulous afternoon! Unseasonably mild so we sat outside and enjoyed a pre lunch drink (husband said the ale was perfect btw). We then went inside the cost bar area and enjoyed a delightful pate to start followed by perfect fish & chips and yummy burger. We found this pub really welcoming, you can see it is cared for as soon as you approach the impressive exterior. Staff balanced efficiency and friendliness well (even brought the dog treats and a water bowl which was a lovely touch). Thank you to the team. After this visit we are coming back for a roast ASAP!
I don’t have the habit of leaving reviews but there is a first time for everything. yesterday evening my wife and I finally caught up with some friend in Putney and they proposed to meet us at the telegraph because of its location off the A3. What was originally a few drinks turned out in a full evening out
As soon as we passed the front door we received a warm welcome from the staff behind the bar. It was quite busy for a Thursday evening but the staff went out of their way to manage to get us a table. The menu was great with good specials with French cooking inflauence advertized on boards. all was great great range of beer and wine , tasty food , great atmosphere and amazing staff what do you want more,we will definitely be back again.thanks you for such a enjoyable evening.
Had a great anniversary party planned for my parents here!
We had been looking for a venue large enough that didn’t cost an arm and a leg. This was the perfect solution that provided us privacy, a beautifully decorated venue and a nice selection of buffet choices. All our friends and family were impressed by the attentive service and abundant food options. Poppy, who helped us plan the event, was amazing both during the event and before. The manager was great – although i can’t remember her name… Thank you to the team who made my parent’s day special!!
Thank you so much for providing great service and really well cooked food & superb venue for Jim McCarthy’s wake.
Myself, partner and family would like to say a big thank you for understanding and your sweet smile Jasmine so friendly it helped us get through it. x x
..”Thank [you] all at The Telegraph and especially you for all the help, support and hard work in making the day unforgettable…
…You made us feel welcome and nothing was too much trouble. We felt very much at home.
The food was delicious and everyone enjoyed it very much. A special mention must be made of the dauphinoise potatoes which were to die for!
We had many comments on how good the service and location were from ‘the place is a real gem’ to ‘what an inspiration The Telegraph is’
We cannot thank you enough for all your kindness and attention to making Jonathan and Jimena’s special day a memorable one”
“I had to organise a Christmas Party for 26 adults. I phoned ahead to book my reservation…
…On arrival our table was laid out with Christmas Crackers and was very festive. The staff were incredibly friendly. They used the spreadsheet I sent and called out the names to each person. They did not get one order wrong and everyone was incredibly happy with the service and the food. I would recommend this place for parties as well as just general eating.”
“…We so enjoyed our evening; I was struck by the kind and attentive manner of the staff (a man and a lady, both quite young), who were so polite and attentive, and seemed to really enjoy what they did, yet were not overbearing at all; just right…
…The food was absolutely wonderful, and came up at just the right time; we had a break of about 20 minutes between courses, which was perfect.
I would definitely go back, and will recommend The Telegraph to everyone-10/10, couldn’t be improved upon!
Thank you for a wonderful evening”
“…Finally and most importantly, on behalf of my sister… and myself, I would again like to thank you for the understanding and help that you personally provided us at a difficult time…
… in the planning and making the arrangements for the [wake] and also, to all your colleagues who provided what was such a wonderful spread of food and drinks at your superb venue. The service that you all provided was excellent and produced what was a very memorable wonderful afternoon to celebrate and commemorate [his life].
Very many thanks to all who were involved at The Telegraph.”
“Thank you so much for my 14th November party. All my guests enjoyed it and said food/drinks were very good. Also thanks to your staff for providing very efficient service.”
“On behalf of Tanen and myself I would like to thank you for the part you and your team played in making our wedding a very special day…”
…Your whole team were very helpful and friendly and contributed to what was a very enjoyable day for both us and our guests. The food provided was also excellent and exactly as we requested, with the quantity and portions provided being more than sufficient.
I have also had positive feedback from many of the guests since then and all have commented on the excellent venue, friendly staff and delicious food.
Finally a big thank you to you personally for all that you did in the weeks and months leading up to the big day. You were always available to answer our questions and very accommodating to all our requests. All in all your efforts contributed greatly to ensuring that everything ran smoothly on the day, thus enabling Tanen and I to enjoy the day.
I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending The Telegraph as a venue to anyone who is looking to arrange a function or wedding.
Mark & Tanen Irving
“Lured by the thought of a “country pub in London”, four friends set off to The Telegraph Pub set in Putney Heath for lunch and we were not disappointed…”
…Both the bar and restaurant were sporting a welcoming log fire with tables set spaciously apart. We settled in with a bottle of 2005 Petit Chablis from Domaine Jean Goulley & Fils priced under £24 and turned our attention to the menu.
There was a wide range of choices and sizes depending upon the appetite and culinary peculiarities – we had gluten intolerance, dairy intolerance, a vegetarian and, yes, one “normal eater” – but the kitchen was not stumped! Our starters ranged from Pumpkin soup and a Crayfish & Sundried Tomato Salad whilst two people shared a gigantic platter of charcuterie, all priced in the range £6 – £7.50 per head.
Main courses were generous – even the “light bites” – and everyone enjoyed their choices: Mint & Lamb Kofta with toasted pita and Tzatzki, Emmental Cheese Ravioli in a rich creamy mushroom sauce with Parmesan crisp and the Telegraph Lamb & Beef Burger. Prices range from £9 for a Caesar Salad to £17 for a Rib Eye Steak. (Light bites are priced from £6 – £8.50).
The home made desserts escaped us as we could only manage to share a Warm Chocolate Fondant with Vanilla ice cream between us but there were 5 to choose from… perhaps next time?
We left happy and full with plans to return again – a summer lunch in the garden with your family, dog or friends after or before a walk on the Heath or over on Wimbledon Common looks very attractive.
“After this place featured in the newsletter I was determined to find it, and it just so happened I stayed at a friends house yesterday in what seemed”
…like the middle of nowhere, and it was 10 minutes away from the pub!! Set in the Putney Heath it is every bit the country pub, but so nice. Over 2 levels there’s quirky art nouveau prints on the walls and flat screens telling you what’s on each night in cute montages interspersed with Charlie Chaplin skits.
As mentioned there’s a French chef, hence the snails. So my first snails were great! I’m sold, garlicky buttery, and with an attractive texture not unlike the best part of mussels, without the grittiness and beards. I’ve got some rather unflattering pixt’s of my very first one but you wont be seeing them, I think grimacing is the adjective(or verb?) for what my poor face was doing.
I also had the goats cheese salad, loved the caramelised red onion, but it needed a bit more salad as the there was a lot of cheese. Further on my entre tip (or as an indecisive little piggy) I ordered the fish soup as well, which wasn’t really to my liking, brown, medium consistency with unidentifiable ground fish but the pesto toasted fresh ciabata was beautiful. My darling lunch companion had what he described as the best battered fish he has ever tried, served as the traditional fish’n’cips with bright mushy peas and tartare sauce A big call, it was good, fresh and thick cooked to perfection.
The room we ate in was children friendly with a big open fire, they all seemed very well behaved and happy children, playing quietly and giggling, occasionally counting with their parents out loud. The room had a number of sofas and armchairs mixed in with table’s chairs and benches. The bar where you order the food was more bar-like (funnily enough) and upstairs seemed to be a more formal dining space again.
Lovely place, reasonable prices (compared with central) and smoke free, the garden must be stunning on sunny days and in summer, I can see my self sipping pimms there already, popping over to the clearing in the heath for a spot of social cricket.. what what?!
“Having read the rave reviews about The Telegraph on TrustedPlaces I was very keen to check it out for myself as it is not too far to drive there from my place”
…I was intrigued by this “Country pub in London”, as it sounded like the perfect place for a relaxing Sunday lunch.
Well, last Sunday dawned sunny, so we were off to The Telegraph. We headed there early to ensure we got a seat out in the garden. We really loved the location – it is tucked away in the middle of Putney Heath and you really do feel like you are in the country. There was plenty of parking nearby, and you can also catch a bus there from Putney (Mon-Sat).
The front garden is filled with picnic tables, while the beautifully restored interior is filled with comfy leather lounges and mix-matched chairs and tables.
We nabbed the perfect table in the garden and I popped inside to order our drinks and lunch at the bar. The staff were very friendly. We both opted for the Sunday Roast – me the beef and he the lamb. Our meals were delivered incredibly fast, a little to fast as we barely had a chance to sip our pre-food beer. The quality of the food was exceptional, a hearty Roast.
We loved the setting and look of The Telegraph so will definitely return again. It is a great place to meet up with friends for a weekend lunch and is child and dog friendly too.
“My husband and I had our wedding reception at the Telegraph. It was fantastic.”
…The staff were brilliant, so helpful, friendly and accomodating throughout the planning, preparation and the actual evening itself. We have had so many comments from friends and family saying what a perfect venue it was and lots of them have been back since. We love it!
“Another thoroughly enjoyable day at The Telegraph – excellent Jennings Cumberland & Weltons Bitter in comfortable and convivial surroundings”
…Crayfish & sun dried tomatoes salad followed by beef carpacio with parmesan were delicious. Caring & friendly staff and management – manager is a real ale enthusiast which is reflected in the quality and selection of the beers.
“Last Friday, the 12th, saw the opening night of the new season of Brook’s Blues Bar, in its luxurious new home in the upstairs function room at The Telegraph”
…Others have praised the new decor, and the quality of the beer, so all I have to say is I agree wholeheartedly, and move on to the music.
It was a cracking night.
The main attraction was the magnificent Giles Hedley, with his band, The Aviators, featuring Richard Sadler on upright bass and the legendary Sam Kelly on drums. Giles plays regular guitars, steel guitars, harmonicas, [sometimes two at once!] with tremendous energy and authenticity, but what really stands out is his voice. He is quite simply one of the very best blues singers in this country. He and the band had the joint rocking and the crowd were eating it up [even though many of them had already eaten the excellent Telegraph grub- greedy buggers!] The place was packed out with excited punters having the time of their lives, and possibly even losing a bit of weight: in spite of the rich diet, the music was hot enough to burn calories.
To eat well, drink well, and hear a band like that with your nearest and dearest has got to be the most pleasure you can have with your trousers on. Go there!
